A Puppy for Christmas
Among all the vehicles in parking lots around the city on any given weekend is folks set up in the back of the truck with puppies for sale. Puppies are so cute, and many people buy a puppy for Christmas for their kids or significant other. One year I even bough my Dad a puppy for Christmas. But before you make your decision, there are some compelling reasons why not to give a dog as a Christmas gift.

This isn’t a picture of my Dad’s beagle, but one I found on Stock Exchange. I had wanted to get my Dad a beagle since he really likes the breed. I found an ad in the local paper for beagle puppies that their mom was AKC registered. At the time I knew very little about the American Kennel Society and still don’t know a whole lot, but it was enough to impress me to buy one. After seeing the beagle-like mom who looked more like a hound than a beagle, I had my doubts about getting a puppy but bought one anyway.
As the beagle grew, he began to look more like a hound than a beagle. I was a little disappointed that the dog wasn’t a small beagle like I thought that it was. He was still a good dog, so I wasn’t upset that we now had a dog we didn’t want. Since then I have learned that dogs that are registered doesn’t necessarily mean too much. I still don’t know a lot about registering a dog, only that it costs money and most anyone can get a dog registered to the dominant breed in the dog.
So, next time I will trust my instinct especially when I see the momma dog that barely resembles what breed the dogs are supposed to be. There’s nothing wrong with mixed breeds. In fact, some of my best dogs have been mixed. But with Christmas fast approaching, some people will be selling puppies that may or may not be what they say. Buyer beware.
