Wild Pets

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

If you love animals as much as I do, the little critters that you see in your neighborhood-birds, squirrels, etc.-feel as much like pets as the animals roaming around inside your house. This is an experience I had with one of those “wild pets”…

Last summer around lunch time I was sitting in the living room with my laptop and my food, you know, the essentials, when I heard a loud DONK! Right away I knew what had happened. Another bird flew into our big front window. I got up and looked down through the glass to see a young grey bird in a daze among our landscaping wood chips.

I immediately went outside to check on the poor little animal. She was young, had speckles on her chest, but I don’t know what kind of bird she was, just that she wasn’t a robin. I gingerly picked her up and could feel her trembling. I examined her for any obvious injuries and noticed that one eye was blinking and one was not. At first I thought it was the blinking eye that was injured, but I turned out to be wrong.

My dad came outside and looked at her, and then tried placing her on a branch in our big tree. She fell off. So then, Dad lightly tossed her into the air, but her wings only fluttered, not enough to sustain flight. He gave her back to me and I planned to stay with her until she recovered, or died. I liked the feeling of her perched along my finger anyway.

So, I just sat in the sun in my driveway, lightly petting my new friend and examining her wings. She wasn’t trembling as much and seemed a little more alert. I tried a few times to set her into flight, but she still couldn’t do it and she was content in my company. I walked around with her and talked to her a bit…it’s so easy for me to talk soothingly to animals…and that was about the time I noticed.

In the time that I had held her, the eye that was not blinking had become red and watery, her eyelid very swollen. It also looked as though the eye itself was not functioning. It did not respond to the wave of my hand. I was worried and feared she was in pain. I even considered taking her to the vet. I had to tell myself that she’s a wild animal, and though quite fragile, I was sure birds lived through these little mishaps all the time.

I kept on holding her, petting her, letting her collect herself. She wouldn’t take off from my hand and I didn’t want her to fall and break a leg. I kneeled down along the yard, placed the young bird in my palm and gently wrapped my fingers around her little body. You can do it this time I thought. Then I tossed her up into the air and she flapped her wings, flying into the tree nearby.

I was oddly proud and incredibly relieved. It felt so good to see her fly successfully, to witness hope that the little bird could live on, and that I was a part of it. That’s the best feeling, helping an animal.

Tell me your animal rescue stories, I’d love to hear them!

Meet the Pets: Mia

Meet Mia, the adopted sweetie…

Adopted: May, 2006

Nicknames: Baby (pronounced like “beebee” in a high-pitched voice), Princess Mia, Baby Mia, Tufty Toes

Quirks: True to one of her nicknames, Mia has long white tufts of fur between the pads of her feet. They actually hinder her coordination a bit, but the fact that she has wide feet to boot contributes to that as well. She loves the other animals in the house, especially Pepsi. Her favorite toy is a little stuffed cow in a football uniform that was Mel’s before she died. I think she likes the scent that Mel left behind on it. Mia LOVES to cuddle, but won’t let us pick her up. She just goes into panic mode because she never had human love and attention in her years as a farm cat before she was taken in by a shelter. She has a squeaky baby meow that is almost irresistable when she’s begging for more food. And she’s COMPLETELY irresistable when she’s asking for love.

Favorite people food: She loves to sample gravy and soups, as well as lick the occasional cheeto.

Why We Love Her: Mia was near feral when we adopted her last May. She has made tons of progress since then and has proven that she can be the sweetheart I always knew she was. She makes a great addition to our house full of little pets, she’s beautiful, loving, and deserving of the love we shower her with. Did I mention she’s beautiful? And sweet? Ok, just making sure.

Do you have any pet adoption success stories?

Meet Dharma, the queen of the house…

Nicknames: Dimmi, Dimarma, Dimarie

Quirks: Insists upon drinking out of a dixie cup in the bathroom, but will settle for the toilet. Wakes up Mom every morning by tipping over the water cup on her nightstand. Goes in to several brief seizure spells a day in which she doesn’t seem to recognize her surroundings. This is brought to an end by either sniffing at one of her people, or sniffing and ocassionally nibbling the cheeks of my Pomeranian, Pepsi, whom she takes pleasure in chasing around the house. Plays fetch with toy mice. When she wants to snuggle, there is no refusing, she’ll find a way.

Favorite People Food: Fruit and vegetables, canned or fresh.

Why We Love Her: Demanding, cute, curious, smart, and the best snuggler, Dharma is the queen of the house and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Oh, and those paws are pretty kissable too.

Do you have a quirky cat? Tell me about it!

So begins the introductions! Meet my sweet little Pomeranian, Pepsi…The Baby.

Nicknames: Poodle, Doodle, Noodle, Poopsie

Quirks: Is most comfy held against my right shoulder. If switched to the left, she will scramble back to the right. Comes to the phrase, “Gimme you!” Hides dog biscuits all over the yard in the summer, remembers where they are in the next and relocates them. Ocassionally senses Dharma’s seizures and is happy to help her through them. Doesn’t know how to bite people and if she does bite hard, it’s by accident. Scared of vents. Loves tearing apart erasers. Recognizable by unusually large ears and cartoonish ear hairs.

Favorite People Foods: Fries, Chips, Ice Cream, Goldfish Crackers

Why We Love Her: A raspy howler that misses me too much to eat when I’m gone, Pepsi is always ready to go “nigh-night,” and loves kisses. She’s a big baby and my shadow. Perfect.
